My Design Process
My design process begins with the creation of a functional form — a platter, vase, or mug — built in stoneware clay or porcelain. Most pieces are wheel-thrown, allowing me to establish a sense of balance and rhythm through repetition and touch, while larger platters are hand-built to encourage looser, more organic movement. Once the form is refined, I add texture and attachments such as handles or sculptural elements, shaping the piece until it feels complete. The work is then left to reach a bone-dry state, preserving every mark and gesture made in the clay.
At this stage, my background as a painter becomes central to the process. For one-of-a-kind pieces, I select a motif — often inspired by the natural world and occasionally drawn from mythology — and sketch directly onto the bone-dry surface. Working without the safety of erasure, I allow the drawing to remain responsive and intuitive. I then build the imagery with underglaze, applying it in a way that echoes gouache and watercolor, using layering, transparency, and brushwork to create depth and movement across the form.
In the final design, I seek a careful balance between raw clay, bare underglaze, and glaze. Each element is given space to breathe, allowing the illustration and the form to inform one another rather than compete. The result is a surface that feels both deliberate and alive — where image, material, and function coexist in quiet tension. Through this process, I aim to create objects that invite close looking and daily use, offering moments of curiosity, play, and connection within the rhythms of everyday life.
